A Washington Post-ABC News this week found 51 percent of Americans opposed the [private Social Security] accounts, up from 41 percent in mid-March. Those supporting accounts fell to 45 percent from 56 percent in March.
The Post-ABC survey showed Bush’s overall approval rating stood at 47 percent, matching an all-time low.
Such polls have left many Republican lawmakers squeamish as they look ahead to the 2006 congressional elections.
