Recent religious-based protests against congressional budget cuts show that liberal and moderate church activists are starting to make themselves heard in a political climate long dominated by conservative Christians, religious leaders and political observers alike say.

“The monologue of the religious right is finally over and a new dialogue has begun,” said the Rev. Jim Wallis, a progressive evangelical Protestant minister.

We can do more than hope it’s true. We can join in. If you identify as liberal or progressive, and either religious or spiritual, check out the following list of worthwhile organizations. Find one or two you like, and send them your membership and your dollars:

• Americans United for the Separation of Church and State, “protects separation of church and state by working on a wide range of pressing political and social issues.”
• Theocracy Watch, a project of the Center for Religion, Ethics and Social Policy (CRESP) at Cornell University.
• Talk to Action, a platform for reporting on, learning about, and analyzing and discussing the religious right — and what to do about it.
• The Interfaith Alliance, the national non-partisan advocacy voice of the interfaith movement.
• The Gamaliel Foundation, a powerful network of grassroots, interfaith, interracial, multi-issue organizations working together to create a more just and more democratic society.
